The 2009 Beach Boomerang Championships is being held this year in Hermosa Beach California. Tournament Director, Morri Mohr, has outlined some novel event planning with the entire tournament being formated for Head to Head competitions. Each competitor will compete against a seeded individual in every event.

Tournament Information:

National Beach Boomerang Championships
March 7th, and 8th
Hermosa Beach, CA

US BEACH BOOMERANG CHAMPIONSHIPS
MORRI MOHR: 310.493.7100
EMAIL: MOHR41@YAHOO.COM

DIRECTIONS FROM LAX AIRPORT

From:
Los Angeles Int'l Airport
Drive: 6.6 mi – about 16 mins
Head west on W Century Blvd toward Vicksburg Ave 0.3 mi
Turn left at S Sepulveda Blvd 5.0 mi
Continue on Pacific Coast Hwy 0.6 mi
Turn right at Pier Ave
Turn left at Hermosa Ave
Turn right at 11th St
Turn right at Beach Dr
Beach Dr - Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

FORMAT:

This tournament will be all Head-To-Head (H2H) for Saturday's
events. Each event will be a tournament in itself. With this format
each participant will have the opourtunity to throw many more
boomerangs as compared to a conventional style tournament (and in the
same amount of time). Each event will be double-elimiation to insure
all throwers at least two rounds before elimination from that event.

To begin each event throwing pairs will be established based each
participants skill level. Based on those pairings you will work your
way through the tournament bracket. If you win each round you will
stay in the winner's bracket and if you lose you will go to the
loser's bracket. The final match for each event will be show-down
between the winner of the winner's bracket and the winner of the
loser's bracket (the loser's bracket winner has to win twice to be
declared the event winner).

The seeding for this style of competition will be set-up to insure
that your elimination round will be competed against a thrower of
similar skill. One of the many positive aspects of this style is of
play (H2H) is the chance to compete against a top-level thrower.
Many tips and techniques can be learned during these rounds that will
make us all better throwers.

H2H order of events:

H2H MTA:
Each round will be a best of three competition (expect the final
round which will be best of five). Each throwing pair will throw
on "Go" of a Ready-Set-Go cadence. To insure as close to a
simultaneous release as possible the thrower who's not saying the
cadence needs to keep the other in his or her field of vision.
Throwers must alternate who says the cadence. Who ever catches last
wins that round, no timers needed. Winners and losers per round
advance as per the tournament bracket.

H2H Fast Catch:
Each round will be a best of three competition (expect the final
round which will be best of five). The throwing field will consist
of a normal 2m and 20m meter radius circles with a second 2m circle
placed 6m downwind from outer edge of the master 2m circle (a teather
is provided to estabish the 6m). Throwers must alternate circles
with each consecutive round. In the event of an errant throw YOU MAY
NOT ENTER the other throwers circle to make a catch. First thrower to
make five catches wins each round. Boomerangs will be range-checked
prior to the start of the first round. Range throws must be made
from the middle of the center circle.

Two sets to throwing pairs will be assigned per circle. One pair
will throw and the other pair will be the starter/judge. Each round
will begin with a Ready-Set-Go and end when one thrower touches any
part of his/her circle after making five catches (standard Fast-Catch
rules apply).

H2H Trick Catch:
Each pair will compete in one round of single trick-catches
(throwing suicide) most points wins. In the case of perfect rounds
each thrower will repeat the round in opposite order in a sudden
death format. Boomerangs will be range checked prior to the start of
the first round and each group can position themselves on the field
as they see fit (with an objective to be visible to the spectators).

H2H Accuracy:
Each pair will throw "at will" until one thrower reaches 50 points.
Throws can be made from anywhere inside the 8m circle. In the event
a returning boomerang hits any thrower prior to touching the ground,
10 points will be deducted from the person's score who was hit and
the thrower will score an automatic 10 for that throw. If you are
hit by your own boomerang you get a 10 point deduction only.

In the event that each thrower has just one throw remaining to make
50 points AND both boomerangs are in the air prior to one landing,
the boomerang with the highest total score over 50 points will win
the round not necessarily the boomerang that landed first.

Two groups will occupy each circle with one group judging and one
group throwing. One circle judge and one scorekeeper are needed per
round. Boomerangs may not be picked up until the circle judge gives
you a score for each throw.

H2H Aussie Round:
Total throwers at the tournament will be spilt in to two groups.
Throwers seeded 1,3,5,7,9,11… will be in Group-One and throwers
2,4,6,8,10,12… will be in Group-Two. Group-One will throw first
while Group-2 range spots. Throwing pairs are established by your
seed and entire group will throw in tandem. Each round will consist
of three throws per pair (most points win). Pairings will be
reestablished as determined by the bracket until one person is the
winner of Group One. At this time the groups will switch and Group
Two will do the same until one winner remains. The group winners
will then throw in tandem (alternating who's first) in a standard
five throw Aussie Round competition.

H2H Scoring Results:
Placing points per event will determine the overall winner.

It seems so inevitable now but at the time no one knew what the result would be. Boomerang competitions are very demanding with 6 different events to master and one errant throw or dropped catch potentially knocking a contender out of the top spot. This was the 2007 US Nationals with competitors from all over the USA and Europe. Would it be Matt Golenor again, the past US Champion and president of the USBA. Would it be “Hole in the Head Gang” buddy Billy Brazelton who dominated on the first day by winning the first 2 events or constant rival and twin brother Richard Bower. “Local Dan” Johnson took second overall with a very strong Trick Catch and strong finish but at the end, no one was even close.

Dan Bower has been rising fast in the Boomerang scene as the 2002 Junior National Champion with consistent dominance until the summer of 2004, when he finished 2nd to his brother Richard at the 18th annual Western Oregon Boomerang Roundup and the Seattle Fall Open. Daniel was a member of the 2004 US World Cup Boomerang Team and threw for US Squad #1 "Gel's Angels". He once again earned a spot on the US team for the 2006 World Championships in Japan, thanks to being undefeated in all 4 tournaments attended during the 2005 season. With continued success in 2006 and 2007 including a 1st place tie with brother Richard in the prestigious SCORE beach tournament, Dan finished off 2007 by blowing away the competition on the final day at the US Nationals.

How did this happen? How could one guy be so consistent and reach such a high level of performance in a difficult field where one dropped catch can cost the entire tournament. What does he have that others strive for? Could it be the physical attributes of 6’ 2” height with long arms and huge hands. Could it be the limber body for the contortionist catches necessary in the Trick Catch event, bane of many throwers on the tournament scene. Could it be the constant focus or the determination revealed only in crucial moments when that winning throw or catch is most necessary. Even a casual observer can see that Dan Bower has the attributes of a champion and that the future looks bright for the US for World Cups to come.

The 2007 US Nationals will be remembered for the quiet excellence and cerebral adjustments of Matt Golenor as time stopped with each throw. It will be remembered for the continued excellence and surprise victory of senior Stu Jones in the Fast Catch event. It will be remembered for the 140 foot LD throw of Tom Wythes and his consistent dominance of that event throughout the day. It will be remembered for Billy Brazelton’s fast start putting the pressure on all competitors from the first event onward. It will be remembered for some great MTA throws and human highlight reel performances from Logan Broadbent but it will be remembered most as the year Dan Bower and the Young Guns took over with a giant ambush at the Eau Claire corral. Dan Bower led the way but Dan Johnson put in a strong performance as did fellow young guns Billy Brazelton and Logan Broadbent with 2 time past champion Matt Golenor the only one hanging on to a podium position from his generation. The baton has been passed and the future is now for the brash young dudes of 2008.

Each event is scheduled to last about one hour and a new National Beach Boomerang Champion will be selected in each event, with an overall winner as well. Training sessions will be given between events for kids and adults of all ages above 8. Recently featured in an article in Popular Science Magazine, Mr Darnell is one of the leading experts in the world on boomerang technology.

The United States Boomerang Association is a non-profit organization promoting the art, sport and science of boomerangs in the United States since 1980.
